EDU Support Blackboard Instructor Tool Guide Tools to stimulate interaction between students Peerceptiv

Peerceptiv

Peerceptiv is a tool that allows you to easily assign and organize peer feedback into your course. It allows students to receive quick, actionable, and anonymous feedback from their peers based on criteria (rubrics) provided by the teacher. In addition to providing feedback to others, students are also able to experience how their peers perform in the assignment. Peerceptiv can be reached from within the Nestor environment and can easily send grades to your course’s Grade Center.

Considerations for choosing Peerceptiv

There are different reasons why you could opt for Peerceptiv and peer feedback in your course. It enhances students’ learning and it creates possibilities for formative assessment, even in large groups since Peerceptiv takes away the administrative burden of assigning students to each other. Students will also develop skills such as evaluation, giving/reacting on feedback, and critical reflection. Research has shown that students improve their learning not only by receiving feedback but also by giving it (Nicol et al., 2014).

The Peerceptiv Process for students

There are four steps which a student needs to do in order to complete a Peerceptiv assignment.

  • Upload a document: A student needs to upload the document to start the review process.

  • Review documents: Students review each other’s work by making use of rubrics (priorly set by the teacher) and open comments. Students will have to do a minimum of three reviews.

  • Back-evaluation (optional): During the back-evaluation period, the students will rate the helpfulness and comment on the reviews that they have received. They do this by giving a score and written feedback.

  • Generate grades: After completing this process Peerceptiv will automatically generate an overall grade which consists of 3 components:

    • Writing grade: This is the grade received on the assignment submission. Peer reviews on the submission and instructor reviews (if the instructor wishes to participate in the reviewing phase of the assessment) are weighted and normed to create this grade.

    • Reviewing grade: This measures a student’s performance during the peer review stage of the assignment. The reviewing grade has two equally weighted components, the accuracy of review ratings and helpfulness of review comments.

    • Task grade: This is a simple completion grade for all reviewing and back-evaluation tasks.

As a teacher, you have the option to also give feedback, check all reviews, or overrule any grading. You can also choose to use a pass/fail grading system for your Peerceptiv assignment, based on the generated grades. More information about the grading system can be found on the Peerceptiv website.

Instructions for teachers

As an instructor, you will have to add the tool into Nestor, then set up the description of the assignment, create the rubrics, set the deadlines and choose your settings

Step 1: Make sure that Peerceptiv is enabled in your Nestor Course. For this go to Customization - Tool Availability and select the Peerceptiv Assignment option.

Step 2: In the content area go to Assessments and select Peerceptiv assignment. Give it a title and select Enable Evaluation, and finally hit enter. This will create a link which will take you or your students to the online Peerceptiv environment. Once the link is created click on it to enter the online environment.

Step 3: follow the instructions from Peerceptiv to create an assignment. Please note that the LMS used by the University of Groningen is Blackboard (Nestor). The Peerceptiv Zendesk gives you access to information about all settings.

Peerceptiv makes use of rubrics (dimensions) and open comments to make sure students provide constructively critical reviews. Effective Rubrics design is necessary to make sure your students will get the most out of the assignment. Please read Nestorhelp information about Rubics and Peerceptiv Best Practices for Rubrics

Step 4: you can use the student manual for Peerceptiv to guide your students. You can find this manual here.

Team member evaluation

Peerceptiv also has a Team member evaluation function for group projects. It allows learners to anonymously rate and comment on the contributions of other group members. Group members will rate each other's professionalism, communication, content knowledge and skills, work ethic, and overall contribution. Instructors have the option to edit, delete, or add to these categories to make the evaluation a better match for the assignment or skills being assessed by the team members. You can use Team Member Evaluation as part of a Peerceptiv group submission assignment or by itself.

Whom to contact?

If you are interested in using Peerceptiv and you would like support, contact nestorsupport@rug.nl. Please mention your course code, assignment set-up and process/deadlines for the assignment. They will be in touch with you to check whether Peerceptiv is the correct tool for you.

More information

When it comes to peer feedback on written documents, Peerceptiv is an alternative for FeedbackFruits Peer review. The set-up of Feedbackfruits is easier for teachers without external support. However, Peerceptiv may provide different features that are more applicable to your teaching situation (e.g. when certain students may not review the assignments of specific peers). For other types of products, such as video, Pitch2Peer is an alternative. For more information on which tool works best for you, didactical advice and support please contact us on edusupport@rug.nl  An educational advisor will contact you shortly.
