Plagiarism Detection by Ouriginal
When you are looking to detect and prevent plagiarism, you need an easy and effective tool. Ouriginal is an automatic text-recognition system made for detecting, preventing, and handling plagiarism, regardless of the language used. The Ouriginal plagiarism checker is easily enabled in Nestor through the click of a button, from within an Assignment. After submission of an assignment, the instructor will be able to view a plagiarism score and a comprehensive report detailing an analysis by Ouriginal .
As a teacher, you can also check documents on plagiarism yourself. You can for example detect plagiarism in theses or reports by uploading these documents. Checking an online exam on plagiarism is also possible with Ouriginal .

Assignment with Plagiarism Detection using Ouriginal
It’s not possible to add the Ouriginal mashup to an Essay Assignment. To be able to use the mashup a regular Assignment needs to be created.
Creating an Ouriginal enabled assignment
Instructors can enable the Ouriginal plagiarism checker for individual assignments and group assignments. In order to create such an Ouriginal enabled assignment, follow these steps:
1. Go to a content area within your course.
2. Go to Assessments and select Assignment
If you want to create an assignment in your exam course, you should go to the 'Exam/Tentamen' folder. Choose Add Assignment to create your assignment.
3. Go to the text editor under Instructions, click on the More… button, and locate Ouriginal
Plagiarism Checker (see image below).
4. Once you click on Ouriginal Plagiarism Checker a pop-up window will appear which looks like the image below. The following options can be configured:
Check Submissions for potential plagiarism using Ouriginal
Make Ouriginal analyse the assignment.Allow a student to view originality report
This means that the report sent back by Ouriginal on document analysis completion is made available for the students and the instructor at the same time. The report and the similarity score will be available for the instructor in Feedback to Learner when grading the assignment for the students. The similarity score for the students (if enabled) will be visible only after the instructor has graded a student for the regular assignment. The Similarity column will not be visible for students, unless you make it available manually.
Caution! The report allows students to review their similarities with academic references as well as other students' work.Include Similarity Score in Grade Center
List the similarity score as returned by Ouriginal in a separate column in the Grade Center. For anonymous assignments, the similarity column will not be visible in the Grade Center for the instructors.
Please note: This is currently the only method to view an overview of all similarity scores, so we advise to enable this option!Submit previously received answers for plagiarism control
This option will only be available if the assignment was already created and there are already some submissions in it. If you enable this option and click Submit, existing submissions will be sent to Ouriginal for analysis. From that moment on the regular workflow for Ouriginal assignments is applicable.
Note: documents that were already submitted to Ouriginal will not be resent and checked again. If necessary, individual document resubmission can be handled triggered using the Resubmit Link in the Grading Notes.Once you click Submit in the pop up window an Ouriginal label will appear in the description box. Next, the instructor can set up the rest of the assignment as usual. You can find more information on assignments here.
Once you are done setting up the assignment click Submit and the Ouriginal enabled assignment will be created.
Similarity column does not work with anonymous grading
If an assignment in Nestor has anonymous grading enabled, the similarity column in the grade center will be automatically set to “hidden”. Manually making the column visible results in the similarity scores being displayed as “in progress”. The similarity scores and reports are still visible through looking at the grade details, or through “Reports > View Grade History”.
View similarity report
As an instructor
As an instructor you can view the report by going to the full grade center, then clicking the arrow in the cell corresponding to the student and the assignment of which you want to see the report, and then selecting View Grade Details. This will redirect you to a page which looks like the one you see in the image below:
You can see the link and similarity score once under Feedback to Learner and once under Grading Notes. The link and score under “feedback to learner” will only be listed here if you selected “Allow a student to view originality report” when setting up the assignment. In order to see the full report click the blue link called Link to Plagiarism Report. Additionally, by clicking the link ReSubmit, you can resubmit the document the student submitted to Ouriginal again, which can come in handy if you want to compare the current submission against submissions of other students which have been submitted afterwards. Ouriginal can display a warning or an error message under Grading Notes if something is out of the ordinary.
If enabled in the settings of Ouriginal in the assignment, a grade column with the name “Similarity-” can be found in the Grade Center. If multiple documents were submitted for the same attempt or a single document was submitted for multiple attempts the Similarity column shall display the result as “MULTI”. In the case that a student submits a single document submission, the similarity score is displayed (see image below for both cases).
As a student
Students in their My Grades view would be able to see feedback as shown below from Ouriginal when the documents have reached a final state in Ouriginal , but only if the instructor explicitly states that the report should be available to students.
Checking documents on plagiarism without using an assignment
If you want to check single documents for plagiarism, you can use the the following tool: https://education.rug.nl/ouriginal-submit/.
This tool can also be found in the Control Panel of a course in Nestor, located under Course Tools as “Ouriginal Manual Check”. Students cannot submit anything using this tool.
