Content Visibility (Adaptive Release)

All content within a course could be set as invisible for students, both manually and automatically. More specifically, particular items within a course could be set invisible for students. Moreover, the visibility of an item within a course could be made invisible using certain rules. For example, rules based on time, student’s grades and groups. This rules-based visibility is called ‘Adaptive Release’.

How to set the visibility of an entire course?

An entire course could be set invisible for students using the following steps:

  1. In your course menu, navigate to Course Management → Customization → Properties.

  2. Here, the course could be set visible or invisible (available or unavailable) for students.

On the same page (Properties), the course could be made invisible using certain time slots. This could be done under the subject duration. Here, three different options are available as shown in the figure below. The visibility of the course will adapt to the duration.

What is adaptive release?

Adaptive Release provides the option of releasing content based on time, membership of a group, grade, or review status. Content, like office documents, links and folders, can be made available based on a number of predetermined criteria. Blackboard has two options to do so:

  1. Adaptive Release > works with standard rules.

  2. Adaptive Release: Advanced > here you have to develop your own rules by using the button `Create Rule'. By making multiple rules with criteria, the level of access can be refined. It gives you the possibility to set up different rules that give a student access to the content.

Setting up an Adaptive Release for an item

The following steps explain how you can set up an adaptive release for an item. These steps are also applicable for other components in Nestor, for example a group enrolment. Note: You can only add Adaptive Release when the Edit Mode is on.

  1. Find the right course in Nestor and choose the item you want to set up an adaptive release for.

  2. Click on the arrow which will appear next to the name of the item and click on Adaptive Release

  3. Subsequently it is possible to set up different criteria:

    1. Date: gives the option of specifying a limited period of time in which the content is available for users. It suffices to enter one or two dates/times here.

    2. Membership: gives the option of giving a specific user and/or group access to the content. You can do that by using Browse to look up the username in the window that opens. Select one or more users and click Submit. The name of the user will be added to the line Membership.

    3. Grade: gives the option of giving access based on the results achieved within the course. A condition to use this rule is the availability of at least one assignment or test in the Grade Center. Next to Select a Grade Center Column, you can select an item from the Grade Center. After that, you can configure whether a user must have made at least one attempt at a certain assignment, or whether a user must have achieved a certain grade, for example. In the example below, the user must have acquired at least 56 points for assignment 1.

    4. Review status: gives the option of making content available when a user has viewed a certain component of the course. Click the button Browse next to the field of Select an item. In the newly opened window, select the item that the user must have viewed before being able to see the item to which this rule applies. A condition for this is that the Review Status is activated for an item. You can do that up front by selecting it next to the item. When you have not enabled the Review Status up front, Blackboard will activate it automatically when choosing a component of the course that is used for the rule Review. Click Submit to activate the rule(s) at the item concerned.

When you click on Submit, the chosen criteria are applied.

Setting up Adaptive Release: Advanced for an item

  1. Find the right course in Nestor and choose the item you want to set up an adaptive release for.

  2. Click on the arrow which will appear next to the name of the item and click on Adaptive Release: Advanced

  3. In order to set create a rule on which will be based when a student will have access to the specific item, you click on Create Rule.

  4. You then have to name the rule you are going to create. When you entered the name you click Submit to continue.

  5. A new screen will open in which you are able to specifiy the criteria you want for this rule. It is possible to create more than one criterion. When you hover over Create Criteria, a menu will appear in which you can choose between the following options:

    1. Date: gives the option of specifying a limited period of time in which the content is available for users. It suffices to enter one or two dates/times here. Click on Submit once you have entered the desired time frame.

    2. Press Submit once you are done selecting the criteria.

    3. Membership: gives the option of giving a specific user and/or group access to the content. You can do that by using Browse to look up the username in the window that opens. Select one or more users and click Submit. The name of the user will be added to the line Membership. Click Submit once you have entered the criteria.

Next to Create Criteria there is also the option Review Status.

  6. It is possible to add multiple rules. In this way students get will get access to the item when they comply with the criteria of one of the rules. In the example below two rules are set, the item will be visible for a student when the student complies with either rule 1 or rule 2.

Rule 1: the item is visible for one group (which group is specified in the criterion itself) until Aug 8, 2020 11:59 PM.

Rule 2: the item is visible for three groups (which groups is specified in the criterion itself) after Aug 9, 2020 12:45.

Here you can see there are two rules for this specific item. A student will be able to see the item either when the student complies with rule 1 OR when the student complies with rule 2.
