EDU Support Blackboard Instructor Assignments, Assessments & Exams Step 2: Construction of your exam Test your exam

Test your exam

As an examiner you might want to know what students will experience during an exam. This could help with communication and spot possible points of improvement.

There is a tool that allows you to do that, the student preview. This instruction will run you through the steps to make use of the preview user, after an exam has been completely set up by your facilitator from Team Assessment Support.

Test your exam

  1. At the top of the Nestor course there is a button with two arrows, if you hover over it you will see the pop up Enter student preview.

  2. Click on that button. This adds your preview user to the course as a student.

  3. When you are in the student preview check the settings in the orange bar on top. Make sure that you check the option Keep the preview user and all data. Then click save.

  4. Exit the student preview

Next you want to grant your student preview access to the exam, while making sure that the students are not able to enter the exam. Do not open the exam course and do not change the time settings that have been applied.

The standard setting for an exam is that the time restrictions have been added to the exam folder or in some cases to the exam items in the folder. This is done through the adaptive release advanced. You will now create an exception to the adaptive release advanced rules for your student preview user. You can do this by:

  1. Using the following step a or b, depending on where the time restrictions are implemented:
    a. Time restrictions on the exam folder: Go to the ‘Exam/Tentamen’ folder. Use the drop down menu next to  ‘Manage Folder Exam / Tentamen’ and choose Adaptive Release: Advanced.

    b. Time restrictions on the exam item: Use the drop down menu next to your exam and select Adaptive Release: Advanced.

  2. Select Create Rule
    a. If a test rule already exists you can click on the arrow next to the rule name and then select Edit Criteria. Then skip the next step.

  3. Name the Rule Test and then click on submit.

  4. Select Create Criteria and in the drop down Membership.

  5. Next to Username select Browse.

  6. In the search bar type preview and then select Go.

  7. Select your preview user, make sure the box in front of it is checked. Then click on submit.

  8. Click on submit on the next screen.

Your preview user has now been added as an exception to the time restrictions. When you now enter the student preview you will see the exam / tentamen folder and will be able to walk through the exam from a student perspective.

When you are done with your test it is advised to remove the rule you have created. Go to the adaptive release advanced using the same steps as before. Select your test rule and delete it.

Important: Notify your facilitator that you have performed a test using your student preview. Your facilitator will then know that he/she has to delete possible submissions made by your preview user.
